Scope and Content Note

The series consists of transcripts of testimony, copies of statements, and additional background information on consumer-related issues bearing on hearings conducted by the committee. Also present is a small amount of organizational material (e.g., witness lists, requests to speak) and a few published guides to hearings, annual legislative summaries, and committee reports. Public hearings were held to consider proposed legislation, evaluate previously enacted legislation, or to investigate specific public and private matters falling under the jurisdiction of the committee.

Files typically consist of some general information on the topic, press releases, public notices and related information, copies of opening statements (typically by members of the assembly), and testimonies (primarily copies of position statements). Testimony is typically by representatives of state and local government and private organizations interested in consumer affairs, such as the New York City Consumer Protection Board; New York Public Interest Research Group; county senior citizens groups; special trade/industry organizations; and lobbyists. There are a few statements by concerned private citizens. Files concern hearings on food labeling; warranties and automobile "lemon laws"; home improvement contracts; pricing, especially of gasoline; purchasing; product quality; the funeral industry; hearing aids; advertising and children; and cable television.
