Administrative History
David M. Steiner was appointed Commissioner of the State Education Department by the State Board of Regents in July of 2009
and officially assumed office the following October. Prior to this appointment, Steiner served as Dean of Hunter College's
School of Education and Director of Arts Education at the National Endowment for the Arts. His academic training included
a master's degree in philosophy from Oxford University and a doctorate in political science from Harvard University. Steiner
resigned the office of commissioner in August of 2011.
