Scope and Content Note

This series consists of the recorded copies of "deeds and title papers" which were filed primarily in Series A0464, Original Deeds and Title Papers. The documents are described more fully in that series, but in general they are deeds or leases to the United States and to New York State, releases of rights in land under water, cessions of jurisdiction to the U.S., leases from the State, etc. The conveyances recorded in this series lack the maps and other documents filed along with the originals. The conveyances are generally in order by recording date, though some were recorded years after they were filed. Except for book 2 all books contain name and place indexes.

The "Miscellaneous Deeds and Title Papers" in book A are not recorded copies but rather the original documents filed in the Secretary of State's office. These include partition or quit-claim deeds to the state for several different lots in Totten and Crossfield's Purchase, with accompanying field notes, title abstracts, copies of probate proceedings, and correspondence. There are also a few releases to the state of property conveyed by Comptroller's tax deeds, and a few leases by the State. Book 1 also contains copies of title documents for New York State monuments at the Gettysburg and Chattanooga battlefields, the originals of which are filed in A0468; and the recorded copies of the contract of sale and the deed to the state from William Seward Webb and the Ne-ha-sa-ne Park Association, 1895, filed in A0820. Books 1 and 2 contain recorded copies of conveyances filed in book A of this series.
