Scope and Content Note

The records in this series relate to "Women New York," a bi-monthly newsletter issued by the New York State Women's Division from 1976 to 1981. Included are drafts and published newsletters, photographs, press releases, correspondence, and other records pertaining to researching, writing, publishing, and distributing the newsletter. Also included are clippings from related publications and copies of the "Women's Unit News," a newsletter issued by an earlier state agency from 1967 to 1974.

Issues of "Women New York" typically contain a major article on one special topic, information on women in public office, status of special legislation, and comments by the Division's Director, Mary Burke Nicholas. Information in the newsletters and the related files cover a wide range of subjects including divorce, teen pregnancy, domestic violence, abortion, Title IX, employment, affirmative action, and women's history. Included is information on state and national women's meetings and on appointments of women to various public offices and committees.
