Scope and Content Note

This series contains correspondence, minutes, reports, and background materials pertaining to meetings of the department's Cardiac Advisory Committee. This committee advises and makes recommendations to the department in areas relating to cardiac surgery in New York State. The records provide detailed documentation on operating standards and procedures, hospital staffing, and surgical costs; and detailed statistics relating to cardiac surgery in New York since the 1950s. The records include reports of site visits to individual hospitals and recommendations for improvement in surgical programs.

The following subcommittees are represented in the records: Freestanding Cardiac Centers; Quality Assurance/Site Surveillance; Certification of Need (CON); Standards, Policies, Credentials; Heart Transplantation; Prevention and Control of Cardiovascular Disease; and Statistics. There is also information on an access study of cardiac services to blacks.
