Originally produced for the federal Interstate Commerce Commission, the maps were acquired by the State Board of Equalization and Assessment in 1960 when it assumed the responsibility of assessing the real property of the state's railroads.

The New York State Archives is part of the Office of Cultural Education, an office of the New York State Education Department.
