Scope and Content Note

This series was generated by the office of Deputy Commissioner Ivan P. Vamos, and contains a wide variety of records related to the operations and future planning in the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). Correspondence, memoranda and notes received by the Governor's office and distributed to OPRHP include citizen suggestions for projects at state parks or historical sites. Correspondence files from members of the State Legislature and state agencies, such as the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health, document collaboration on OPRHP activities.

In addition, the files contain copies of deeds, geological surveys, research studies/reports, and environmental analyses on lands acquired or transferred by OPRHP. Examples of transfers from this time period include the acquisition of lands at Minnewaska and a proposed exchange of 278 acres at Montauk Air Force Station (formerly Camp Hero) to the U.S. Department of the Interior for 138.4 acres on Fire Island in the Long Island area.

There are also records relating to the operations of parks, recreation and historic sites such as evaluations of storm damage, environmental issues and repairs. Other subjects include trail maintenance, problems with Canadian geese, canopies, sign repairs, and maintenance of bridges and roads leading to and from state parks. Also included are assessment studies and correspondence for work at Irondequoit Bay Outlet in the Rochester area. Other records include copies of testimonies of public hearings at the State Capitol and committee records.
