Scope and Content Note

This series consists of certified transcripts of election returns submitted to the secretary of state by the Kings County Clerk. The transcripts were taken from the official canvasses of the Kings County Board of Canvassers and include tallies of votes cast for each candidate for various state and county offices. Records from 1888 pertain to the offices of associate judge of the Court of Appeals; member of the State Assembly; justice of sessions, Kings County; and Kings County register. Tallies from 1888 also document the selection of electors in that year's presidential election. Lastly, the returns document the vote on a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would allow the governor to appoint a second division of the court of appeals consisting of seven supreme court justices serving as associate judges. The goal of the amendment was to reduce the backlog of cases on the court calendar. Records from 1898 pertain to the offices of secretary of state, comptroller, attorney general, and member of the State Assembly.
