Scope and Content Note

This volume contains entries of writs sealed by and issued out of the Supreme Court of Judicature of the Province of New York. Each entry gives the names of parties to the cause, the type of writ (including the amount of debt if a writ of capias ad respondendum, or the amount of judgment if a writ of execution), the form of action under common law (assumpsit, trespass, etc.), and the name of the attorney to whom the writ was issued. Every type of writ is included. Writs of capias ad respondendum (caps.), fieri facias (fi. fa.), and capias ad satisfaciendum (ca. sa.) are the most common.

There are also many entries for bills of New York ("bill"), a counterpart to the writ of capias ad respondendum used in actions where the defendant resided in the city and county of New York. Other writs entered occasionally are the writs of certiorari, habeas corpus, scire facias, venire facias juratores, inquiry, subpoena, etc.
