Scope and Content Note

This series contains photographic film negatives in the following sizes: 35 mm, 2 1/4" x 2 1/4", 4" x 5", 5" x 7" and 8" x 10". These photographs were made by the Education Department probably to serve as a source of illustrations for department publications and to document departmental ceremonial functions, such as the presentation of awards, retirement of personnel, or holding of Convocations of the University of the State of New York.

The subjects of these photographs include: Education Department employees and administrators; Board of Regents; visitors to the Education Department; Education Department award ceremonies; Convocations of the University of the State of New York; historic documents, prints, and photographs held by the New York State Library; artifacts held by the New York State Museum; schools, teachers, and school activities; and agricultural scenes.

Negatives are in jackets, usually giving the following information: negative number; index number (this number is written in pencil above the negative number; it corresponds to the numbers given in Series A4196, Subject Index to Publicity Photograph Negatives, and to the order in which the negatives are arranged); date of image; photographer; Education division or bureau that is the subject of the photograph; and title. Negative jackets contain from one to over a dozen negatives, all under a single negative number, index number, and title.
