Scope and Content Note

This series consists of the original bill of sale and record of the action of the Council of the Onondaga Nation. This bill of sale sold and transferred the Onondaga Nation's interest in the wampum belts and office of wampum-keeper to the State University of New York. The bill of sale lists the terms of the sale and transfer and is signed by the sachems and chiefs of the Onondaga Nation. This record was damaged in the 1911 Capitol fire which resulted in brittleness, bleeding of ink, and damage to the wax seals of the sachems and chiefs.

Also included in this series is an article entitled "Wampum" by John DuPont which includes a typewritten transcript of the bill of sale. This article ran in the Winter 1969-1970 edition of the New York State Museum's publication Naho.
