Scope and Content Note

The series consists of one volume of daily reports describing punishments given to those incarcerated at Auburn during the years 1836 to 1846. Chapter 302 of the Laws of 1835 allowed assistant keepers at State prisons to punish those incarcerated at their discretion provided that they reported their actions in writing to the prison's agent or deputy keeper.

The short narrative reports include: date; name of assistant keeper; name of individual punished; offense committed; location of offense; and punishment given. Occasionally, the reports also include a one sentence description of significant events occurring at the prison such as fires, resignations of officials, and missing incarcerated persons.
