Administrative History

A law of 1780 (Ch. 69) appointed and empowered state agents to secure supplies for which the inhabitants of various localities had been assessed. In return for the supplies, the agent was to issue a certificate, noting the amount of goods supplied and their cost, the certificate to bear 6% interest. The agent was required to make an account of money received to the auditor general every six months, and he was entitled to compensation on money spent in carrying out his duties.
