Scope and Content Note

This series consists of statements and tables of income (mainly rents), derived from taxes due on the real estate of the late William Beard for the years 1905-1913, located in the vicinity of the old Erie Basin in Brooklyn. Lands were to be acquired by the Barge Canal Terminal Commission for its terminal in New York Harbor.

There are also working papers submitted by the Comptroller's office to the Attorney General in litigation over the estate. They include data on the operation of the old Erie Basin, which had apparently been leased to Beard as agent of the state. The Canal Law (L. 1909, Art. 6) empowered the Superintendent of Public Works to appropriate lands for the construction or repair of canals.
