Scope and Content Note

This series consists of a miscellaneous group of affidavits and certificates pertaining to the documentation of land ownership, payment of real estate taxes and the location of land owned. The records for the most part appear to have been compiled by local county officials (justices of the peace, notaries public and county clerks) and were in turn submitted to the Auditor-General's Office and, after 1797, the Comptroller's Office. Depending on the subject being certified, the records provide information on name of land owner, how much land and location (mostly county, township and lot, but in some instances extremely detailed), amount paid for land described, date purchased, from whom, taxes due, taxes paid, date, and whether or not improvements have been made on the land described.
