Scope and Content Note

These letterbooks are carbon copy responses to requests for searches of taxes and sales for taxes on portions of land.

Each letter lists any taxes and tax sales and date of those taxes and tax sales for the specific plot of land for which the request was submitted. The Comptroller was responsible for selling land for payment of delinquent taxes and these records were apparently the ones used in conducting the searches. Searches were conducted by clerks in the Comptroller's Office for various individual title companies and lawyers. The tax records that these letters are made up from are not readily apparent in the holdings of the State Archives.
