Scope and Content Note
This series consists of documents relating to draining of Cayuga Marshes.
From 1825-1841 the documents contained are oaths of office of Commissioners for Draining the Cayuga Marshes; vouchers and bills for labor and materials; and letters to the Comptroller. Documents from 1853-1861 include contracts of Liberty L. Lowell and William Baldwin with the Canal Commissioners for Draining the Cayuga Marshes, pursuant to a law of 1853; abstracts of expenditures, 1853-1858, submitted by Canal Comissioner to the Comptroller; and miscellaneous accounts and receipts. The work on draining the marshes was resumed after having been discontinued for a time under the Democratic "stop" policy of halting further work on canals and related improvements. The work on the marshes in this period was carried out pursuant to a law of 1825, providing for draining marshes at outlet of Cayuga Lake, and a law of 1831, extending the area to be drained down the Seneca River to Jack's Reef. The documents are endorsed.
