Scope and Content Note

This series consists of a statement (labeled "Exhibit B") of bonds and mortgages taken by City Chamberlain, City and County of New York, for loans from trust funds and court funds, as of January 1, 1899. Each entry gives the name of the bondsman and address, premises covered by the mortgage, amount and date of the mortgage, interest, appraiser's value, assessed value, insurance coverage, and remarks.

Attached is a letter of transmittal from the examiner to the Comptroller, detailing irregularities in the appraisal of property pledged to secure mortgages. The statement was presumably drawn up pursuant to Chapter 483 of Laws of 1885, which authorized appointment of appraisers of estates for the purpose of levying a tax on those estates. It is not known what "Exhibit B" refers to.
