Summary:

This series consists of a statistical report of state census by county clerks from returns of census marshals. Summary information for each town or city ward includes number of persons by sex, age, marital status, state or country of birth and education; number of aliens, paupers, colored persons, taxed and not taxed and military eligibility; data on acreage, crops, livestock; types of manufacturing establishments and religious establishments; and ages and circumstances of the "deaf and dumb," blind, "idiots," and "lunatics".

Administrative History

The Census of 1845 was taken pursuant to Article I, Section 6 of the Constitution of 1821, and Chapter 140 of the Laws of 1845. The compilation of the state census was administered through the Secretary of State's office.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of a statistical report of state census enumeration, prepared by the county clerks from the returns of the census marshals. For each town or city ward the following data are provided: 1. Name of town or number of ward; 2. Number of males; 3. Number of females; 4. Number of males subject to militia duty; 5. Number of persons entitled to vote; 6. Number of aliens; 7. Number of paupers; 8. Number of persons of color, not taxed; 9. Number of persons colored, taxed; 10. Number of persons of color who are legal voters; 11. Number of married females under age 45; 12. Number of unmarried females between ages 16 and 45; 13. Number of unmarried females under age 16; 14. Number of marriages the preceding year; 15. Number of births the preceding year (male/female); 16. Number of deaths the preceding year (male/female); 17. Number of persons born in New York State; 18. Number of persons born in New England states; 19. Number of persons born in any other state; 20. Number of persons born in Mexico or South America; 21. Number of persons born in Great Britain or its possessions; 22. Number of persons born in France; 23. Number of persons born in Germany; 24. Number of persons born in other parts of Europe; 25. Number of children between ages of 5 and 16; 26. Number of children attending common schools; 27. Number of children attending private or select schools; 28. Number of children attending academies or seminaries; 29. Number of children attending colleges or universities; 30. Number of yards of domestic fulled cloth manufactured the previous year; 31. Number of yards of domestic flannel and other woolen cloths not fulled manufactured the previous year; 32. Number of yards of domestic linen, cotton, or other thin cloth manufactured the previous year; 33. Number of acres of improved land.

Nos. 34-44 give number of acres and quantity raised of various crops, namely barley, peas, beans, buckwheat, turnips, potatoes, flax, wheat, corn, rye, oats. No. 45 gives number of pounds of butter and cheese made the previous year. No. 46 gives number of horses; 47. Number of sheep under one year old and over one year old, number of fleeces and number of pounds of wool; 48. Number of hogs.

Following is a "Statistical return" giving data on manufacturing establishments, as follows: 1. Gristmills; 2. Sawmills; 3. Oil mills; 4. Fulling mills: 5. Carding machines; 6. Cotton factories; 7. Woolen factories; 8. Iron works; 9. Trip hammers; 10. Distilleries; 11. Asheries; 12. Glass factories; 13. Rope factories; 14. Chain cable factories; 15. Oil cloth factories; 16. Dyeing and printing factories; 17. Clover mills; 18. Paper mills; 19. Tanneries; 20. Breweries. For each is given the number of establishments, the value of raw material used and manufactured, and the value of manufactured articles. No. 21 gives the number of pounds of raw silk manufactured, and the total number of manufactories (incorporated and unincorporated).

The following are statistics on ages and circumstances of the "deaf and dumb," blind, "idiots," and "lunatics"; and statistics on "churches or places of worship," giving the number of churches, cost of buildings, real estate, and other improvements, for the following denominations: 1. Baptist; 2. Episcopalian; 3. Presbyterian; 4. Congregational; 5. Methodist; 6. Roman Catholic; 7. Dutch Reformed; 8. Universalist; 9. Unitarian; 10. Jews; 11. Quakers; statistics on educational institutions, giving number of institutions, cost of buildings, real estate, and other improvements for: 1. Colleges; 2. Universities; 3. Academies; 4. Female seminaries; 5. Other incorporated institutions, giving number of institutions of learning; 6. Normal schools; 7. Common schools (including number of pupils on teachers' lists and average attendants); 8. Private and select schools (including number of children attending). Last are statistics on the number of inns and taverns, wholesale stores, retail stores, groceries, farmers, merchants, manufacturers, mechanics, attorneys, clergymen (including total salaries paid), and physicians and surgeons. There is also a blank book of printed headings and columns for the use of the census enumerator in an individual town or ward.
