Scope and Content Note

This series consists of original rolled transcripts of testimony taken in the breech of official bond trial of Munson G. Lockwood and other officers of the Sing Sing State Prison. The testimony contains detailed information in a narrative form on the business and financial affairs of Sing Sing State Prison during Lockwood's term as agent (1850-1854). The disclosure of Lockwood and other state prison agents' mismanagement and malfeasance in 1854 was followed by a legislative investigation and major revisions in the laws governing the management of state prisons. All statements are indicated by the name of the witness and are periodically numbered.
