Scope and Content Note

This volume contains two questionnaires filled out by each inmade. In one questionnaire, the superintendent requests inmates to discuss what they like about the institution; in the other, what they do not like. Superintendent Franklin H. Briggs began numerous reforms of the New York State Industrial School after taking office in 1894, including a reorganization of the educational system, and sent these questionnaires to inmates to get their opinions on the institution's strengths and weaknesses.

Both questionnaires provide inmate's name, division, grade, and shop. Opinions are solicited on institution shops; schools; military, (including drill and clothing); yards; sleeping halls; dining rooms and food; bath room; guard house; and chapel service.
