Scope and Content Note

For each teacher seeking certification the following information is recorded: name; address; age, number of terms taught; previous certification; examination dates; numerical scores in examination subject areas; and number, grade, and date of certificate issued.

At the end of the volume the names of persons granted first, second, and third grade certificates, temporary licenses, and indorsed certificates are listed, as well as persons examined under the uniform examination system. These records were kept in bound form through 1896; the following year a card file was used.

This series also includes one book each of stubs of second and third grade certificates issued by the Richmond County school commissioner. Each stub provides a summary of the information contained in the volume and cards. School commissioners were authorized to issue teaching certificates (Chapter 555) and 1894 (Chapter 556). A commissioner could also endorse for use in the district the first and second grade certificates issued by another commissioner.
