Scope and Content Note
Unbound series consists of correspondence, memoranda, bulletins, press releases, statistical reports, applications, clippings, and a few blueprints relating to the Education Department's cooperation in the Federal government's National Defense Training Program. These records primarily document the establishment and administration of the program of Vocational Education for National Defense.
They include information on the establishment and operation of training centers, the allocation of federal funds to training programs, and the appointment of vocational training instructors.
New York began its national defense training efforts in July 1940. Different aspects of the programs receiving federal funding include: vocational courses on extension and pre-employment bases; acquisition of equipment for vocational training facilities; establishment of state-run vocational training centers, including special centers for the aircraft industries; vocational instruction for out-of-school rural youth; and vocational instruction for youth on National Youth Administration work projects.
