Scope and Content Note

"Order Books" were kept in accordance with institution bylaws directing the superintendent to keep a book of orders and directives of institution officials. These memoranda are pasted onto the pages of a volume. Most are communications between Superintendent F.H. Briggs and Chief of the Discipline Department David Bruce.

The memoranda include orders concerning procedures for reporting and punishing cadets (inmates) for misconduct; requests for supplies listed; requests for needed repairs; monthly lists of employees and the number of reports of misconduct made by each; lists of books sent to various departments; notices that certain cadets had been reported or sent to the Guard House (for solitary confinement); "religious assignments" listing cadets and their religion; lists of cadets transferred to other institutions; and statistical reports on the number of inmates in each division, number of reports of misconduct, number of paroles, number of escapes, and related matters.
