There is no indication who kept this scrapbook or for what purpose, but the lack of any discernible arrangement indicates that it was not kept regularly.
The scrapbook contains programs for school events, including menus for holiday meals, entertainment schedules, programs for chapel services (including services for deceased inmates), and schedules for military exercises; notices and orders, including instructions to officers for holidays, orders implementing daily schedules, and blank card forms notifying members of the board of managers of meetings or chapel services; and clippings, including several short essays on "A Boy's Duty" or "A Child's Duty," a listing of juvenile reformatories by state, and newspaper articles concerning inmate escapes and fights and one concerning solitary confinement practices at the Massachusetts State Prison at Charlestown.
