Scope and Content Note

The Catholic Chaplain, who also served as Parole Agent for Catholic inmates, used this volume mainly to keep track of inmates paroled between January 11, 1887 and January 9, 1889; he also used it later on to list inmates and parolees between October 1, 1904 and October 1, 1906.

Parole records from 1887-1889 (inmate numbers 5189-7105) may provide such information as: inmate name and number; date paroled; date received in institution; to whom and where paroled; occupation; conduct at work and home, sometimes given in the form of a quote from a letter from the parolee's parents or from the parolee himself; and if ran away from home where paroled: date ran away, possible whereabouts, and if caused by home conditions.

Most entries are very brief narratives, sometimes only providing the inmate name and number, date paroled, date received, and to whom paroled.

The lists of inmates present and paroled from October 1, 1904 to October 1, 1905 and October 1, 1905-October 1, 1906 are similar to those in series A1966, Parole Rosters, providing: inmate name and number; and, for inmates not present at the institution, date paroled (or, in a few cases, date escaped).

Statistics on inmates "on roster" (present at the institution), paroled, and escaped from October of the reporting year were included in the institution's annual reports.
