Scope and Content Note

The Catholic Chaplain, who also served as Parole Agent for Catholic inmates, recorded background information on newly admitted inmates (inmate numbers 6990-8084) gathered from interviews with them.

Entries provide such information as: inmate name and number; division to which assigned; date of interview; date received; if previously institutionalized; cause of commitment; and if parents alive: location, occupation. In a few cases there are entries made at later dates providing: quotes from letters from parents, relatives, or clergy regarding inmate's character; remarks on religious training such as, "Made his first communion;" and to whom paroled.

Chaplains spoke to inmates upon arrival, supervised their religious training, spoke to them periodically, tracked their progress while at the institution, and supervised their parole.
