Scope and Content Note

These contracts provided for payments to allow children from one school district to attend school in a neighboring district. Contracting districts generally were common school districts whose school age population was too small to justify maintenance of a school.

The contracts contain the following information: names, titles, and addresses of contracting school officials; town and school district number of contracting districts; amount paid per student and terms of payment; assessed valuation of contracting district; number of school age children in contracting district and number who will attend school under the contract; name of person or firm hired to transport students from contracting district, period of contract, and amount to be paid; and list of children to be taught under the contract, giving names, ages, and number of miles to contract school.

Later contracts also provide additional information on the contracting district: number of children attending school within district; and number of teachers employed in district.
