Scope and Content Note

The series consists of abstracts of account disbursements, vouchers, and receipts for field expenses incurred by members of the United States Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) working in New York State from 1893-1894. Accounts were paid according to provisions of Chapter 287 of the Laws of 1893, which authorized the state engineer and surveyor to cooperate with the U.S.G.S. in making a topographic survey and map of the state, including locating and marking county and town boundary lines. The state engineer arranged the method, order, and details of the work with the director of the U.S.G.S., and sums were allocated to pay for the work by warrant of the comptroller to the order of the state engineer.

The U.S.G.S. appropriation forms show worker's name and title, voucher number, date, expense designation, and amounts owed and paid (with check number and name of bank). They are signed by a U.S.G.S. official and certified by a notary. An itemized statement and signed receipt(s) are also typically included.
