Scope and Content Note

The index volume is an alphabetical listing of a few personal names, referring (presumably) to pages in an unspecified account book. The only clue to context derives from the volume title, "Index to Miscellaneous Canal Accounts." The book is undated and unattributed.

Several loose (related?) documents found at the fore of the index volume are dated 1822. One is a letter requesting attendance at the comptroller's office for an audit of the treasurer's accounts. Other papers refer to a potential offering of an "Albany City Lottery" and include a list of prize money. During the early 19th century, lotteries were a source of municipal finance for improvement projects, and as such might be audited by the comptroller's office.
