Scope and Content Note

This series documents the work of Dr. H. Jackson Davis during his tenure with the New York State Department of Health, where he administered the State's medical program for persons receiving public relief assistance. Record types found in the series include: correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, research notes, statistics, publications, bulletins, news releases, and graphic material such as charts, tables, and diagrams. Created during the New Deal, the records reflect the Department of Health's concerted effort - with the State Temporary Emergency Relief Administration (TERA), Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA), and Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA), which in 1935 replaced the FERA - to provide medical care to unemployed New Yorkers and their families; to secure jobs for medical professionals; and to raise awareness about a set of public health issues, including: milk and dairy inspection; child and adult nutrition; sewage and sanitation; care of the transient and homeless; dental hygiene; immunizations; and communicable disease control. In addition, the records are strong in documenting health care in the home environment, reimbursement of health care professionals, and health care administration at the local level in New York State.
