Scope and Content Note
The State Engineer and Surveyor's Office produced these standard printed forms to identify the specifications for road improvements being put out for bid. County boards of supervisors passed resolutions requesting road improvements. The State Engineer and Surveyor produced specifications for improvements in response to these resolutions. Once the county supervisors had approved the specifications and other plans, the State Engineer let the contracts for the work, and a county engineer or other engineer supervised the work under the direction of the State Engineer.
Specifications for each road contain the following information: road number; date work to be done by and/or year specification produced; width of road (in feet); length of section of road to be improved (in miles); materials to use; procedures for carrying out the work; and State Engineer's estimates of quantities of materials needed. The form of the booklets changed slightly in 1905, but the same information is provided.
