Scope and Content Note

This series consists mainly of incoming correspondence directed to Brigadier General Isaac Vanderpoel, Engineer in Chief. Judging from the content of some of the correspondence, Vanderpoel, in addition to his duties as Engineer in Chief, was also the Acting Assistant Adjutant-General in 1864.

The bulk of the correspondence deals with the enrollment of men into the State's National Guard. The majority of the records pertain to routine administrative matters such as requests for enrollment books by enrolling officers, appointments of enrolling officers, transmission of enrollment records and lists of names of enrolling officers for regimental districts, requests for certificates, and questions concerning specific enrollment procedures.
