Scope and Content Note

This series essentially pertains to the state's effort in raising and equipping the volunteer forces mustered into federal service during the early years of the Civil War.

Specific subjects dealt with by the telegrams include the appointment of officers, mustering in of regiments, assignments of companies to regiments, promotions, arrangement of transportation for regiments leaving the state, recruitment of new regiments, procurement of arms from the Commissary General's office, mustering out of three-month regiments, and the payment of troops.

Volume one, containing letter press copies of telegrams sent by the Adjutant General's Office, dates from February 1 through September 23, 1862. Most of the telegrams in this volume were signed by J.B. Stonehouse, who was the Assistant Adjutant General to Thomas Hillhouse. Volume two consists of original telegrams sent to the Adjutant General's Office as well as copies of telegrams directed to Governor Edwin D. Morgan. The telegrams in this volume date between August 21 and September 12, 1862.
