Scope and Content Note

This series provides information on recipients of all varieties of teaching certificates issued by the Education Department. These include certificates entitling the licensee to hold administrative positions in schools (e.g. school principal) as well as to teach. A great variety of teaching certificates were issued based on years of teacher training, previous general education, and examination results.

For each certificate issued, the following information was given: name and address of licensee; date of certificate; date certificate sent; type of certificate; certificate number; district superintendent's name, district number, and county; and remarks (usually noting receipt of a college degree or other formal training). Renewals and extensions of certificates, 1941-1946, are in a separate volume giving the same information.

"In-service endorsements" (apparently the conversion of provisional certificates to permanent certificates after a certain length of time), 1946-1951, are also recorded in a separate volume. This volume provides only the licensee's name, type of certificate, and certificate number.

Also included with this series is an unbound list of recipients of academic teaching certificates, 1919-1923. This list gives only name and certificate number and is arranged numerically by certificate number.

A4197-97: This accretion contains teaching certificate registers for renewals and extensions (1935-1940, 1946-1951) and registers of certificates issued (1939-1940, 1950-1951).
