Scope and Content Note

This series consists of vouchers, some receipted, for cash, submitted by employees of the New York State Geological and Natural History Survey for payment of services rendered and supplies purchased.

Included are vouchers from the state geologists and their assistants responsible for the four geological districts of the survey; the survey's mineralogist, botanist, paleontologist, and zoologist; and "petty expenses," such as transportation and equipment costs. In addition to vouchers there are a few separate receipts, drafts for payment, abstracts of expenses, and one letter by Governor W. L. Marcy explaining special pay arrangements made for one of the state geologists, W. W. Mathers. These records are all dated 1837 and 1839.

Also included in this series are vouchers and comptroller's warrants to pay the salaries and expenses of the State Geological Survey under James Hall and of the State Agricultural Survey under the direction of Ebenezer Emmons. Many of the vouchers are for printing and ongoing costs of the published reports of the surveys, and for supplies or shipping costs of specimens.
