Scope and Content Note

Records microfilmed in this series originate from Schuyler County and from several towns within the county. Types of records include court records, census books, real property, highway, administrative and burial records, and Civil War enlistments.

Records from Schuyler County include: lis pendens books and index (1860-1880); U.S. Censuses of Population (by county election district) for 1860, 1870, and 1880; and real property records (1796-1856), consisting of indexes and volumes of transcribed deeds from Chemung, Steuben, and Tompkins Counties (the counties from which Schuyler County was formed in 1854).

Records for the town of Cayuta include commissioner of highway record books (1844-1928), town clerk's record and minute books (1845-1995), and miscellaneous school records filed in the town clerk's office (teacher contracts, collector's accounts).

Records for the Town of Orange include burial certificates and layouts of cemeteries (1923-1994); and Town Board meeting minutes (1908-1994).

Town of Reading records include town clerk's record and minute books (1827-1991); town clerk's fee books (1945-1960); register of chattel mortgages (1914-1935); jury lists (1854-1914); published statistical compendia of the U.S. Census of 1840 and the N.Y. Censuses of 1855, 1865, and 1875; published lists of officers and enlisted men in New York volunteer regiments (1864); typewritten reminiscences of the community of Reading Center (1988); published town and highway laws (1891, 1904); highway commissioner's record books (including surveys and accounts); other highway and bridge construction documents; and copies of naturalization papers for Reading residents (1896-1906).
