Scope and Content Note
This series consists of between 100 and 150 unbound notices of appointment (originals and copies) of lesser state officials. The bulk of the appointments concern the appointment of individuals to offices within various departments of the state government, but also includes appointments made at local and county levels. The notices usually provide the name of the appointee, residence, office of appointment, effective date, date of notice, and appointer's name and official capacity.
Some of the notices may contain the name of the appointee's predecessor and the seat of the department in which the appointee worked. The notices of appointment were filed in the secretary's office probably as a result of Chapter 12 of the Laws of 1778, which made the secretary of state the clerk to the Council of Appointment. Many of the notices cite the statute under which the appointments were made.
