Scope and Content Note

This series consists of three bound volumes of abstracts that were probably provided by the secretary of state's office as a means of accounting for the expiration date of the terms of office of commissioners of deeds for other states, territories and foreign countries. The secretary of state was mandated to record the appointments and oaths of these officers (L. 1840, Ch. 290). Volume One (1850-1871) lists the name of the appointee, residence (town and county), date of commission and the name of the officer in whose place he was appointed.

Volume Two (ca. 1816-1865) contains the same information and the date the oath of office was taken or filed. Volume Three (1901-1908) is actually two separate books bound into one volume, and it provides the date of appointment or expiration date of term in office (unclear), name of appointee and residence (city and occasionally street or building name).
