Scope and Content Note

This series contains certified copies of election returns submitted by the county board of commissioners to the secretary of state's office. The original returns were filed in the county clerk's office. These returns were submitted under the provisions of Chapter 250 of the Laws of 1822 (which was preceded by Chapter 51 of the Laws of 1799). These certificates are printed on forms that provide the name of the county to which the form applies, the date on which the county board of canvassers met "to canvass and estimate the votes," the date and type of election held, the office being canvassed, the total number of votes cast by the electorate, the names of the candidates, the number of votes received by each, the number of ballots marked for identification or rejected, the names of the members of the board, the signature of the county clerk attesting to the fact that these figures are the same as the originals on file in his office, and the date signed.
