Scope and Content Note

These folders contain medical and circumstantial evidence collected by bureau epidemiologists to determine the source and type of each reported case of typhoid fever, and medical information on the course of the illness.

The documentation typically consists of a case investigation form detailing vital statistics; history of typhoid fever occurrence and vaccinations; course of antibiotic treatment; possible sources of exposure to and further spread of typhoid; household and visitor census; and laboratory specimen culturing results. The form also includes a narrative case history. The file may also contain correspondence among local and state public health investigators, and laboratory findings leading to the patient's release from convalescent carrier status.
