Administrative History

Chapter 314 of the Laws of 1826 created the Canal Board, which originally consisted of the Commissioners of the Canal Fund and the Canal Commissioners. In 1846, the office of State Engineer and Surveyor was established, and this official became a member of the Canal Board in 1848. In 1878, the Superintendent of Public Works succeeded the Canal Commissioners as a member of the Canal Board (Article V, Section 3 of the State Constitution).
