In 1846, the Office of the State Engineer and Surveyor was established, and this official became a member of the Canal Board in 1848. The Canal Contracting Board was created in 1854 (Chapter 329), and consisted of the Canal Commissioners, the Comptroller, and the State Engineer and Surveyor. In 1878, the Superintendent of Public Works succeeded the Canal Commissioners as a member of the Canal Board pursuant to an 1876 amendment to the State Constitution. The Canal Board was abolished pursuant to the constitutional reorganization of 1925. The Contracting Board operated until 1870 when Chapter 55 abolished the body.
