Scope and Content Note

This series consists of typed reports, tables, charts, and estimates pertaining to a proposed canal between the Seneca River and Cayuga Lake. The records were generated by the State Engineer and Surveyor's office pursuant to Chapter 700 of the Laws of 1905. Most of the reports are directed to Henry A. Van Alstyne, the State Engineer and Surveyor at that time. The reports and supporting records deal mainly with the feasibility of such a project, its estimated cost, which route would be the most efficient, and the type and amount of work required for such a project. There are also detailed reports on such subjects as the regulation of the water surface in Cayuga Lake.
