Scope and Content Note

This series consists of 5" x 7" and 5"x 8" index cards that list the locations of various Barge Canal construction records. The index appears to have been compiled by the State Engineer and Surveyor's office personnel between 1917 and 1919, in order to account for the whereabouts of the working documents relating to the construction of the Barge Canal. The index cards pertain to the location of maps; terminal field books; final estimates for both Terminal and Barge Canal contracts; Barge Canal field, computation, construction and cross section books; and unidentified "sheets."

The cards dealing with the field, computation, construction, and cross section books provide the following data: book number, to whom given, date, purpose, and "where now filed." The cards pertaining to both Terminal and Barge Canal contract final estimates provide a brief description of what comprises the estimates, as well as the number of pages, total number of "sheets"; (diagrams?), the location, and usually the date when the inventory occurred. The final estimates were either shelved or bound with the contract. Notations are also included regarding extra work orders, if any were issued. The index cards for the maps provide a description of the map and a set of numbers. It is unclear as to whether the numbers are old shelf locations or numbers assigned to the maps. The location of these maps is unknown.
