Scope and Content Note

These files contain incoming and outgoing correspondence, memorandums, blueprints, plans, tracings, drawings, bridge measurements, computations, inspection notes and cost estimates regarding the construction of highway bridges throughout New York State. The bulk of the documents date between 1921 and 1923 and were either directed to or generated by the Third Deputy Commissioner's office, which was in charge of the Bureau of Town Highways. During this period, William B. Reed headed the bureau.

About one third of the files consist of correspondence concerning routine administrative matters, such as the transmittal of plans, or requests for specifications. The remaining files deal with technical aspects of bridge construction, and contain information on bridge designs and specifications. Much of the correspondence is between county superintendents of highways, private contractors, division engineers, private citizens and personnel within the office of the Third Deputy Commissioner, including Commissioner Reed.
