Scope and Content Note

The 1848 law governing the incorporation and operation of bridge companies required them to report annually to the State Engineer and Surveyor, whose responsibilities included road planning.

Annual reports in this volume provide: name of bridge company; date report filed; deposition that the report is accurate, made by the company president or other representative; dates articles of association filed in State Engineer's office and in county clerk's office; description of bridge, including: name of river it spans, town and county, length, width, height, and description of type of bridge; rates of toll; data on capital stock; cost of company property: bridge, toll house, right of way, and other; indebtedness of the company; receipts, payments, and dividends during the year; balance on hand; name of newspaper in which annual report published; location of company's principal office; names of company officers; and address of company.
