Scope and Content Note

The volumes in this series consist of forms recording actions taken on petitions for road construction. The forms provide: the petition number (also page number), name and number of road, county, section petitioned for, towns that the section passes through, dates petitions for survey and for work were passed, amount appropriated by county (volumes 3-10), date the preliminary examination was made, date approved (volumes 1-2), distance to be improved, surface and width of the road, date the plans were adopted (volumes 1-2), date that bids were received, date the contract was awarded and to whom, engineer(s) in charge of surveys and work (volumes 1-2), date the work was to be completed (volumes 1-2), date the work was done (volumes 1-2), dates of final estimates and final draft (volumes 1-2), costs and cost estimates, the law authorizing the work (volumes 1-2), names, addresses, and bids of bidders, and remarks, usually regarding bids or funding.

A shorter, less detailed form was used beginning in December 1903. Information on costs and bids was often omitted after 1903. Occasionally, summary forms containing similar information or later work on the road, and memoranda regarding the work, were attached to the forms in the volume.
