Scope and Content Note

This series contains statistical population reports submitted to the deparment by state youth facilities under its control. There are two subseries:

1) Weekly Population Reports, 1940-1961, 2.5 cubic feet. These reports were filed weekly, but provide a daily count of children in the institution and those temporarily absent. The number of children in each housing unit on the last day of the week is also reported. Some institutions reported additional information, such as number of infants (Hudson), breakdown of those absent by reason for absence (AWOL, hospital, escape, visit - Warwick), names of boys absent and their location (e.g. state hospital, local jail - annex).

2) Monthly Statistical Reports of Children Under Care, 1942-1949, 0.5 cubic feet. These reports vary in detail. Some give only the number of admissions, discharges, and total children at the institution. Others contain detailed statistical breakdowns by type of intake or discharge, by whereabouts if paroled or absent, and by departmental regional district of origin.

These reports were bound at irregular intervals in prong fastener binders.
