Scope and Content Note

This series consists of a volume of reports; cost estimates, certificates and sketch maps relating to the Middle Division of the New York State Canal System which ran from Cayuga to Oneida County. This volume was authored by A.P. Goodsell, Division engineer of the Middle Division Engineer's Office. Many of these records appear to be drafts or copies of official documents.

Reports take the form of a progress update on a project, e.g. raising bridges on the Chemung Canal or work done on the Kingsley Brook Reservoir. The engineer reported on how the work was going, cost estimates and recommendations and any suggested amendments to original plans. Estimates describe the cost of materials and/or labor for a project, providing information on the cost of each item and the total cost. Certificates state that work on a project was completed and who it was completed by. An overview of the project, how long it took, and total costs are often provided in each certificate. Sketch maps and cross section profiles of canals are included, containing measurements of embankment, and excavation work. The index to this series identifies "Miscellaneous" records contained in this series. These include copies of memoranda, resolutions, and printed notices; calculations; specifications; and other similar records.
